Les Hôpitaux Universitaire de genève (HUG) will assist the ministry of health of Mauritius in the fight against diabetes. Yesterday a protocol agreement has been signed at Port-Louis by Bernard Gruson, HUG Director and the Health Minister Satish Faugoo who declared that: our number one public enemy is the diabetes. A person out of five older than 30 years old and a person out of 2 older than 50 years old contracts diabetes. This Protocol points out the following subjects: – Support to the National Diabetes Framework. – Financing the purchse of retinal cameras. – Assisting the Ministry in the setting up of an online National Register for recording cases of diabetes type I and II. – Training to medical and para medical staff. – Assisting patients inoperable in Mauritius. Mr. Gruson insured that the HUG will continue to help Mauritius in the field of health. “The diabetes concerns us all, it’s a world plague and it is necessary to avoid paternalism. We will continue to cooperate”. Dr Tabatabay and his staff who works in partnership with HUG have up to date performed over 180 complicated interventions and 20 cornea transplantations.
