A Consultant Specialist from Switzerland, Professor Christian Prüente, was in Mauritius last week to perform a series of vitrectomy surgeries on Mauritian patients at the New Souillac Hospital.

During the one-week visit to Mauritius, Professor Prüente carried out some 15 complicated vitrectomy surgeries. This initiative of the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Teaching Eye Surgery (TES) Foundation had as objectives to provide health care facilities with regard to the treatment of complicated eye surgeries locally.

In a statement, Professor Prüente pointed out that most of the retina surgeries he has carried out in Mauritius are tough cases related to diabetes.  He also seized the opportunity to express his appreciation for the work being done at the Hospital while emphasising that the staff are motivated in their duties.

Around 50 to 70 cataract surgeries are carried out at the Hospital per week. Annually, some 2 500 to 3 000 cataract surgeries are conducted at the New Souillac Hospital.
