From 2010 to 2024, the Eye Clinic struggled with a backlog of cataract surgery patients, with waiting lists reaching 3,500 cases. However, by the end of 2024, with the help of Teaching Eye Surgery Foundation, the Health Care Agency (HCA) successfully cleared the backlog, reducing waiting patients to just six. This was announced in a press briefing by the HCA yesterday morning at the Red Roof Building in Victoria. This marks a significant advancement in eye care services, ending years of delays and long waiting times. It signals a key improvement in the delivery of ophthalmic care, addressing one of the most common causes of vision impairment and blindness. With the prevalence of cataracts rising due to the ageing population, this represents a crucial step forward in meeting the growing demand for cataract surgery.
