Introduction to Vitrectomy – Ongoing Collaboration Since 2018

Since 2018, TES Foundation has been engaged in a long-term collaboration with Victoria Hospital in Mahé to progressively develop retinal surgery competencies in Seychelles.

During the January 2026 mission, Dr. Roland Barbey and Professor Tabatabay continued this structured program with hands-on training in vitrectomy techniques. Vitrectomy is a highly specialized microsurgical procedure used to treat complex retinal conditions such as retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and macular disorders.

Retinal surgery represents a major step forward in the development of advanced ophthalmic services. Through close mentorship in the operating theatre, gradual skill transfer, and repeated missions over the years, TES Foundation supports the safe and sustainable introduction of these complex procedures.

This is not a one-time intervention — it is a long-term project built on trust, continuity, and progressive capacity building. The goal is clear: to enable local teams to independently manage retinal pathologies and reduce the need for overseas referrals.

By strengthening subspecialty expertise in retina surgery, we are helping to ensure that patients in Seychelles can access advanced eye care within their own healthcare system.

TES Foundation remains committed to sustainable development through education, partnership, and excellence in surgical training.
